Arriving at the cruise port of Saguenay aboard the Silver Shadow was a thrilling moment. Eager to explore the charms of La Baie, I embarked on the Discovery on Foot tour, which promised an authentic look at this beautiful region. One of the highlights of our exploration was a visit to the delightful Auberge des 21, an experience marked by warmth, hospitality, and unforgettable surprises.
As we stepped into the Auberge des 21, the owner herself greeted us with a radiant smile. Her passion for the place was palpable as she enthusiastically guided us to the art gallery, a captivating space that features a massive window shaped like the inn’s logo, framing an awe-inspiring view of the Saguenay Fjord. Fun fact: The Saguenay Fjord is the fourth largest in the world, and seeing it from this unique vantage point was a breathtaking experience.
Our host proudly shared the story behind this beautiful space, highlighting how it was designed as part of the Auberge’s ongoing commitment to sustainable development. This year, they transformed four areas of the hotel with environmentally friendly designs, proving that even small companies can make a significant impact. The art gallery, with its perfect blend of creativity and eco-consciousness, was one of those transformations, and it radiates inspiration.
The gallery itself boasts a permanent art exhibition of stunning paintings owned by the hotel. Local artists are also encouraged to showcase their work here, making it a vibrant hub for creative expression. We took a seat on restored church benches that had been salvaged from a closed church and painted by an artist from Jonquière named Bodoque. Each bench was unique, beautifully decorated and integrated into the exhibition, alongside tables that were once part of the guest rooms, also upcycled and hand-painted.
The gallery even includes a small library, where guests can browse books in three languages while soaking in the calm atmosphere and spectacular view. It’s the perfect setting to unwind, and I could imagine myself lingering there for hours.
And then, the experience became even more delectable. Valeria, our gracious host, served us a piece of wild blueberry pie made by the Auberge’s chef. It was my first time tasting wild blueberries, and the flavors were simply divine. To complement the pie, we enjoyed creamy ice cream from Laiterie de La Baie, adding an extra touch of local magic.
But that wasn’t all! Valeria treated us to a special tea ceremony. She introduced us to Labrador Tea, a traditional infusion cherished by the First Nations. Passing around a green bag of the aromatic leaves, we inhaled the fresh, earthy scent. The tea itself was comforting and fragrant, a perfect companion to the decadent blueberry pie. This thoughtful treat was a true immersion into the flavors and traditions of Quebec.
As our visit came to a close, we gathered back in the lobby. Some fellow travelers explored the boutique or freshened up in the restrooms, while others wandered through more art-filled spaces. The hotel’s walls are adorned with captivating exhibitions, each telling a story. I was particularly taken by the “Enchanted Seasons of La Baie,” a collection of 24 photographs that showcase the ever-changing beauty of La Baie throughout the year. Gazing at these images, I felt as though I had journeyed through the seasons myself, discovering a new appreciation for this special place.
Our visit to Auberge des 21 was easily the best stop of our tour. The genuine hospitality, the incredible local flavors, and the beautifully curated art made for an experience I will never forget. If you ever find yourself in La Baie, this is a stop you simply cannot miss.
